Is Juicing Right for You?

It is best to receive nutrients from a whole food source, processed using traditional methods. However, there are times that juicing can be beneficial if done properly, for a limited time and if one does not have any contraindication.

Juicing extracts the juice from fresh fruits or vegetables. The resulting liquid contains most of the vitamins, minerals and plant chemicals (phytonutrients) found in the whole fruit.

Typically, I am not a big fan of consuming juice for the many reasons including:

  • Lack of fiber: Juicing releases the sugars in fruit and removes the insoluble fibre
  • Fructose: Juicing releases the sugars in fruit

Whole fruits and vegetables also have healthy fiber, which is lost during most juicing. … And fiber can help you feel full. Also most of the sugar in fruit is fructose. Fructose is processed by the liver.  A small amount of fructose, in an apple for example, doesn’t usually cause harm because we consume it along with the fibre. Fibre protects us against the effects of fructose by slowing its absorption, and also makes us feel full. Fruit juice, on the other hand, is absorbed immediately, like all sugary drinks, as the fibre has been removed.

According to Dr Robert Lustig, US obesity expert and author of Fat Chance: The Bitter Truth About Sugar  “‘’When you turn fruit into juice, you are losing the insoluble fibre, which is an essential nutrient and helps delay absorption of the sugar. Take the fibre away and you’re just drinking sugar and calories.”

When helping my father in law heal from his cancer, my research kept leading me to the benefits of juicing especially for cancer patients. In my quest to find the answers, I found the truth.

Since one could not possibly digest that much produce in one day, it is necessary to remove all the bulk and fiber from the fruits and vegetables so that it is quickly and easily digested, while retaining the maximum amount of nutrients and enzymes. The Gerson center in Tijuana recommends an average cancer patient drink up to 13 glasses of fresh, organic, raw juices daily. That is an equivalent of 15 pounds of produce in liquid form.

This tremendous influx of liquid provides the nutritional equivalent of almost seventeen pounds of food a day. The consumption of that quantity of food on a daily basis would be impossible.

Secondly, patients suffering from degenerative diseases almost always have difficulty properly digesting and absorbing food. This can be a result of toxicity, malfunction of the digestive system, a decrease in stomach acid production, or a variety of other causes. This digestive weakness is the same reason that many patients have difficulty digesting and absorbing vitamin and mineral supplements in pill or capsule form.

Dr. Gerson’s clinical experimentation showed that fresh juice from raw foods provided the easiest and most effective way of providing high quality nutrition

Juices are completely smooth and pulp-free, for optimal digestion and nutrient absorption.

There are 4 juices that Gerson Therapy uses: Only organic green, carrot, carrot/apple (Granny Smith or tart Fiji apple), and orange (or grapefruit) juices. No substitutes and only consume when freshly produced.

Not every juicer has the mechanical capability to accomplish this task, which is why the Gerson Therapy requires a very specific type of juicer: a two-step machine, with a grinder and a hydraulic press. This type of juicer has two separate components. The first component is a grinder, which grinds the vegetable into a fine, moist pulp. The second is a hydraulic press, which extracts the juice of the vegetable from the pulp by pressing it under high pressure. Dr. Gerson found that grinding the produce before pressing was essential. The pulp of the different fruits and vegetables should be mixed and pressed together, because the malic acid contained in the apples allows the other vegetables to release more minerals. For this process, a two-step juicer is necessary, because in a one-step masticating juicer each item is ground and pressed separately. During the process of grinding and pressing, the produce is not subjected to heat or electricity, so the fresh, healing enzymes in the raw fruits and vegetables are preserved in the juices. In Gerson’s decades of experience, they have found that these are the most effective and efficient juicers, and best suited for providing the optimal nutrition for the Gerson Therapy. According to Gerson Institute, research in this area, although limited, indicates that juice produced by the grinder/press can be as much as 50 percent higher in certain essential nutrients, and will produce 25 to 50% more than other juicers from the same amount of raw produce. These two juicers fit these criteria, and are appropriate for using for the Gerson Therapy for cancer: the Norwalk juicer or a Champion juicer with a separate hydraulic juice press. They also offer loaner program to qualified participants. I have no affiliation with them.

If you are looking for something more affordable yet effective, I have found another company that offers slow juicer*  (Click HERE to see their features) and possesses all of the advantages of a cold press juicer without many of the downsides. It is slick, beautiful and efficient. The fruit and vegetables can be juiced together or separately, depending on your liking. It isn’t difficult to juice leafy greens, but we recommend you juicing with a more dense fruit or veggie with it so you get all the juices of the leaf. I recommend the HH Elite (classic model).

Juicing fresh organic produce yourself is the best. It does take time to make those delicious drinks and to clean up. It does take time and effort to go to the store, pick the right amount of vegetables and fruits and then come home, prep them and start juicing. It is worth it.
