Indoor levels of pollutants may be two to five times — and occasionally more than 100 times — higher than outdoor levels”

quote from The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)

While many people focus on outdoor air when they hear ‘air pollution’, you may be surprised to learn that the EPA has discovered indoor air contains 2 to 5 times and potentially as much as 100 times more contaminants than the air outdoors!

Indoor air pollution is made up of solid and liquid particles that are suspended in your air – or particulate matter.

These suspended particles can consist of dust, metals, smoke, liquid droplets, chemicals and pollen. And most contaminants aren’t visible.

Indoor air pollution has truly become one of the most serious environmental threats to your health. Yet, no government agency monitors or controls it and studies on its health effects are limited.

Besides build up and form a greasy dirty film you may see on your air-intake vent, a clue to the quality of your indoor air might be how you feel. Do you sometimes experience any of these symptoms for no apparent reason?

  • Itchy, watery eyes
  • Runny nose
  • Scratchy throat
  • Headaches
  • Dizziness
  • Forgetfulness
  • Fatigue
  • Moodiness

Types of contaminants that could be in your house

  • Formaldehyde from paint, bookshelves, cabinets, beds, plastics, cosmetics, fabrics, pillows and drapes
  • VOCs, or volatile organic compounds, from paint, pesticides, building and hobby materials, cleaners and cabinetry
  • Lead from old paint (simply opening an old painted window can release it into your air)
  • Airborne bacteria and viruses from humans, pets, moist surfaces and ventilation systems
  • Flame-retardant chemicals from furniture, carpeting and mattresses
  • Fragrances and other chemicals from candles and cleaning and laundry supplies
  • Mold, mildew and other pollutants from faulty plumbing and leaky foundations and roofs
  • Dander and allergens from pets and other animals
  • Tobacco smoke, including second- and third-hand smoke
  • Compounds from cooking. Roasting or frying food creates organic compound byproducts and without proper ventilation, Korean researchers have found the concentration of these dust particles can reach levels 25 times higher than what’s considered “very unhealthy!”

Additional dangerous particles from wild fires

  • Particles
  • Toxic Gases (CO2; CO; NOx; SOx; Ozone)
  • Solvents & Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAHs)
  • Toxic Metals
  • Herbicides & Pesticides
  • Perfluoronated Compounds
  • Plastics
  • PCB’s
  • Asbestos

Many pollutants are activated and exposed once burned, not to mention the massive amounts of carbon dioxide released during a fire! And all of these pollutants unfortunately wind up in our homes and smoke and smoke damage can be very insidious to get rid of.

These pollutants can contribute to the development of allergies, headaches, general fatigue, thyroid disorders, memory and fertility issue and even more serious conditions like cancer or nervous system disorders.

Some, like formaldehyde, certain VOCs and flame retardants are known or suspected carcinogens. Others can potentially harm your thyroid, IQ, memory and fertility.

Size Does Matter

Size matters when it comes to pollutants. Particles 10 micrometers (or microns) in diameter or smaller (like the organic compounds, mold, metals, chemicals and pollen in your indoor air) can be inhaled, penetrate tissue and lodge deep inside your lungs. From there they can enter your bloodstream and damage your heart and other organs.

To appreciate how small these particles truly are, below you can see how these common particles compare to a human hair and a few grains of beach sand!

PM stands for particulate matter (also called particle pollution): the term for a mixture of solid particles and liquid droplets found in the air. Some particles, such as dust, dirt, soot, or smoke, are large or dark enough to be seen with the naked eye. Others are so small they can only be detected using an electron microscope.

Particle pollution includes:

  • PM10 : inhalable particles, with diameters that are generally 10 micrometers and smaller; and
  • PM2.5 : fine inhalable particles, with diameters that are generally 2.5 micrometers and smaller.
    • How small is 2.5 micrometers? Think about a single hair from your head. The average human hair is about 70 micrometers in diameter – making it 30 times larger than the largest fine particle.

Here is impact a particulate size has on one’s health.

What are the Harmful Effects of PM?

Particulate matter contains microscopic solids or liquid droplets that are so small that they can be inhaled and cause serious health problems. Some particles less than 10 micrometers in diameter can get deep into your lungs and some may even get into your bloodstream. Of these, particles less than 2.5 micrometers in diameter, also known as fine particles or PM2.5, pose the greatest risk to health.
